Almost 60 teams from Universities from all over the world applied for participation in The Negotiation Challenge 2014. Only 18 of them were selected, based on their CVs and motivational letters, to travel to Reykjavik, Iceland to compete.

The participating teams must prove their skills through four negotiation rounds. The two best teams are selected to the final fifth round and negotiate in front of an international jury composed of lawyers, business leaders and professors. The best team wins a trophy and is titled ”World Negotiation Champion.” Through the competition participants were evaluated on both the final outcome of a deal and the soft side of negotiation. Among other criteria, the jury evaluated how sustainable the strategies were and how convincingly they were presented.

The Negotiation Challenge was founded in 2007 and is the first international negotiation competition in Europe and one of only few international negotiation competitions in the world. The main goal of TNC is to provide a competitive platform to help students to prepare for the complex business negotiations  they will face in the working life. The challenge allows students from leading universities from all over the world to come together and compete against each other in realistic team negotiation situations. Participating in TNC offers a great opportunity to experience various ways of negotiation and to meet and network with students from various countries with different backgrounds and cultures.

The TNC 2014 was organized by Reykjavik University. The rounds of negotiations took place in and around Reykjavik at different locations. In the rooms of Reykjavik University, the restructuring of the market for renewable energy was negotiated. In a historic Viking village the division of treasure between two Viking warriors were on the stake. In the Blue Lagoon, the participants negotiated on the funding of a public-private partnership project for the construction of a thermal bath resort. In the geothermal power station, partners negotiated the most profitable project and allocation of gained resources during Danish church sell. In the final round which took place in Reykjavik 's latest architectural landmark, the Harpa Concert Hall, the negotiation was related to the future cooperation and strategy between the Polish chocolate bars manufacturer of Prince Polo and its Icelandic distributor.

“TNC is more about people than competition – this is what I told myself after the final when many competitors teams approached us with sincere congratulations and support for our team. We definitely won in this area and winning the whole competition on the hard side of the deal was just a nice complementary element.” says with a smile Bartek Dominikowski. Patrycja Marton states: “I had prepared myself to this competition over last few years. Negotiation is my passion and I’m happy I finally had a chance to share this passion with other participants of TNC by leading the negotiations based on trust and partnership. I am really glad that the approach we set got verified by the fact we won.”
